Weight Loss Surgery
Margaret's Story !

I had weight loss surgery in 2012. Weight was an issue for me my whole life, I chose surgery after many years and attempts at long term weight loss with no success. My experience with pre-op, post-op, and maintaining my weight was difficult. I also struggled emotionally with this new me, my new body and mind, and how others reacted to me because of this dramatic change. I am here to help you navigate this process with the support, care, and education YOU DESERVE!

OF HAVING WEIGHTLOSS SURGERY
OUTSIDE OF THE USA!

Here are some of things that we all  need to know about this process !

 Before Surgery

Going alone was scary. Margaret was alone when she had her surgery. Our team will answer questions and help take the fear out of the process. We do not give medical advice but we support and guide you through your surgeon's suggestions for recovery and meals pre and post. You will never feel alone.
Maintenance
This is the most intense change that takes place, having a new body within a few months. Nutrition and exercise now a necessity. Understanding the change in biology of your body and how nutrition is so important to maintain your health. Family, friends, and coworkers are now experiencing this new person. Mindful Life addresses these complicated issues to make your transition smoother!

3 Reasons I chose
Medical Tourism

1. Qualifications: I didn't have to have the BMI necessary for the surgery to be done in the USA. That was a big factor for me. With a BMI of 33 I didn't meet the qualifications for a BMI of 35 or above and did not want to gain more weight before getting help.

2. Cost: The cost of the surgery was $15,000 or morein the U.S. My insurance would not pay for it as it was more of an elective surgery. The cost of weight loss surgery in Mexico is generally around $5,000.

3. Safety: I had friends who had weight loss surgery in Mexico and they were all doing well, some were even medical professionals as I am, I felt safe. I researched the different programs and chose the one that was the best fit for me.

Let's face a truth.

The insurance industry has sooo much influence on what we can and can't do.

This is a personal decision. It was something I felt was in my best interest.

WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO DECIDE WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU?

Encouraging you to take this step is NOT what I am about. I am about YOU deciding to NOT DO IT ALONE!

My faulty thinking was that I could do it alone.

DON'T DO THE SAME THING I DID!   DON'T BE STRONG, GO IT ALONE AND YEARS LATER
STRUGGLE TO KEEP IT ALL TOGETHER!

Is this YOU?

I HAVE ALWAYS STRUGGLED TO LOOSE WEIGHT

I HAVE FAILED AND AM TIRED OF FAILING

MY LIFE WOULD BE SO MUCH BETTER

As a Bariatric Patient I never really understood the challenges that I would face! Family and friends didn't know how to interact with me. I was always defending my choices. I wanted more than anything to BE thin and FEEL healthy.

I NEVER FELT THIN!

I DON'T REMEMBER FEELING LIKE THIS BEFORE! That I was all alone

We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions

based on our personal experience as well as research from Princeton Health,
the University of North Carolina Health, and the National Institute of Health.

Q. What are the major types of weight loss surgery?
A. Gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, and lap banding.

Q. How does weight loss surgery help me lose weight?
A. Weight loss is achieved by limiting the amount of overall food that can be eaten and it restricts the amount of calories that can be absorbed through the digestive tract.

Q. Will I qualify for weight loss surgery?
A. According to the National Institute of Health guidelines to qualify for weight loss surgery in the U.S. you should have a BMI of 35-40 plus any obesity related chronic health condition such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, infertility, and/or sleep apnea. Qualifying for weight loss surgery in Mexico is less stringent and based on your surgeon’s individual guidelines, it is typically easier to qualify for weight loss surgery in Mexico.

Q. Which weight loss surgery is right for me?
A. Typically this is based on how much weight you need to lose. Lap band is typically for patients who have 25-50 pounds to lose. Sleeve Gastrectomy is for patients who have 50-100 pounds to lose. Gastric bypass is for patients who have 100 pounds or more to lose.

Q. How long does the procedure take?
A. The lap band typically takes 1-2 hours while the sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass take about 2-3 hours.

Q. How many incisions will I have?
A. These procedures are usually done laparoscopically which means your surgeon will make 4-6 1 to 1 ½ inch incisions on your abdomen to perform your procedure.

Q. How long will I take to heal?
A. Most patients heal in 2-6 weeks depending on the procedure you had done.

Q. What do the pre and post op diets look like?
A.  Your Surgeon will have specific pre and post-op diets that he wants you to stick to for very important reasons.
·      The pre-op diet typically begins 2-3 weeks before your surgery and includes a low calorie (800-1200 per day), low carb, high protein (60-70 grams per day). Then 2-3 days before your scheduled procedure you will begin a liquid only diet with no soda.
·      The Post-op diet will start with non-carbonated, sugar free clear liquids only for the first week. The second week you will generally be able to add full liquids back in. Week three you will begin a diet of soft foods. And week four you will be back to a regular diet that focuses on healthy choices and protiens.

Q. Will I have emotional changes as my body changes?
A. Yes, you will have many different emotions about the changes happening to your body as well as the lifestyle changes you are experiencing. Many times, people will talk to you or treat you differently because they do not understand what you are going through. You are becoming a new you, you will not have all the same emotions, behaviors, and habits that you used to. They have to get to know the new you just as you are getting to know yourself.

Q. Can the procedure be reversed?
A. The lap band is reversable by having the band removed. The gastric bypass is potentially reversable, based on the recommendations of your surgeon. The Sleeve gastrectomy is rarely able to be reversed.

Q. Does weight loss surgery guarantee weight loss?
A. All weight loss surgery patients will lose weight initially but there is no guarantee that you will maintain your weight loss unless you continue to follow the dietary guidelines for the rest of your life.

Q. Is getting enough nutrition going to be an issue?
A. It is commonly an issue but can be controlled by ensuring you are getting your daily protein and fluid requirements in. This can be tricky at first when you are only able to take in a half to one cup of food at a time. Protein supplements are necessary in the immediate post-op stage to ensure you are meeting your requirements.

Q. Will I need to take vitamin supplements?
A. Yes, just as you are not absorbing as many calories you will also not be absorbing as much nutrition from the food you eat. You will need to be diligent about taking a multivitamin for the rest of your life. Most patients take multivitamins that are specifically made for bariatric surgery patients because they are much easier absorbed.

Q. Will I have any food restrictions?
A. You may not tolerate certain foods that you used to. Heart burn or indigestion is a common issue with post weight loss surgery patients but can be easily treated with an over-the-counter acid reducer and avoiding the foods that tend to worsen the condition.

Q. What if something goes wrong after I get back home?
A. Our program will guide you through your post-op stage, but you will also need to follow-up with your primary physician as we do not give direct medical care such as medical advice or prescribing medications. I have a friend who had a lot of post-op difficulty, when he called the number to talk to someone from the group he went through in Mexico for guidance, they told him to see his local physician and let them know how it went. He ended up seeing a bariatric surgeon here in the U.S. and ultimately had to have an additional procedure. There will be resources available to you if needed.
